Ladder Safety

  1. Pick the Right Ladder
Choose a ladder suitable for the job in type and length. Avoid using metal ladders near electrical installations, and use step or extension ladders based on task height and positioning.
  2. Check Ladder Conditions
Inspect ladders before use. Ensure all parts are intact and free from defects such as cracks, corrosion, or loose components. Avoid painted ladders, as paint can conceal structural damage.
  3. Setup Ladder Correctly
Proper setup is key. Use the "four up, one out" rule for straight ladders: for every 4 feet of ladder height, place the base 1 foot away from the wall. Ensure stability on uneven surfaces and ensure at least a 3-foot extension when accessing roofs.
  4. Work Safely on the Ladder
Maintain three-point contact, stay centered, and never overreach. Wear proper footwear, avoid carrying tools in your hands, and never use a ladder under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
