Your furnace is your first line of defense against freezing winter temperatures, but what happens when it stops working in the middle of the season?
At Finken, we know how critical a working heating system is for your home. Here are a few key warning signs that your furnace is on the verge of failure—and what you can do about it.
One of the most obvious signs of furnace trouble—aside from it not turning on at all—is irregular noises. If your furnace is making:
✔️ Banging or clanking sounds – Could indicate loose ductwork or internal damage.
✔️ Squealing noises – Might signal a damaged fan belt.
✔️ Rumbling sounds – Could point to improper combustion.
If your furnace is making unusual noises, don’t ignore them—call a heating professional ASAP to diagnose the issue before it worsens.
A gas leak is a serious issue that requires immediate attention. If you notice a strong gas smell, it may be due to:
✔️ A faulty heat exchanger
✔️ Damaged ductwork or gas leaks
Gas leaks can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning, so if you suspect one, turn off your furnace, evacuate, and call for emergency repairs immediately.
Your furnace pilot light should burn blue. If it’s any other color, something is wrong inside your unit.
✔️ A yellow or orange flame means there is a combustion problem, which can cause carbon monoxide buildup—a serious safety hazard.
✔️ If you notice any discoloration in the flame, call a heating professional immediately.
If your furnace is acting up, making strange noises, or won’t turn on, don’t wait until it’s too late.
