Mother of Three Receives the Gift of a New Furnace for the New Year

A very special mother, Lori Smith, received an incredible gift this holiday season—a brand-new furnace—thanks to her sister’s heartfelt nomination.

A Well-Deserved Recognition

Lori Smith, a single mother of three teenagers, was recognized as a hero through the Finken Plumbing, Heating & Cooling/Bryant Community Heroes award. Her sister, Lisa Adams, nominated Lori for her tireless dedication to volunteering and serving others, all while balancing two jobs and raising her children.

Lisa described Lori’s selfless spirit, saying:

“She bakes for funerals, stays overnight with homeless people at her church, helps transport elderly community members, cleans their homes, and graciously assists with any needs they have. She has a pure passion for helping those in need.”

A Life of Strength and Service

Originally from Richmond, Lori has lived in St. Cloud since 1989. She purchased her home in south central St. Cloud just a year ago, a milestone she takes great pride in as a single mother.

Her resilience has been tested over the years. At just nine years old, she lost her father, Floyd Adams, the former mayor of Richmond. Raised by her mother, Mickie, Lori grew up surrounded by strong women. She carries that strength with her today, saying:

“I can do this.”

In 1992, Lori faced another challenge—a ruptured brain aneurysm left her with limited use of her left foot. But her optimistic spirit remains unshaken:

“I just have a little hitch in my giddy-up,” she said.

With a deep sense of spirituality guiding her, Lori lives by one motto:

“I live my life like I’m on my way to Heaven. I just like to help.”

Dedication to Her Community

Lori works as the head cook at Westwood Elementary, where she takes pride in nourishing and interacting with the children. She is also deeply involved in food service advocacy and has even testified at the State Capitol to support programs ensuring every kindergartener in Minnesota has access to free school breakfast.

On top of her full-time job, she also works at Clearwater Travel Plaza’s food court. Despite her busy schedule, she makes time for her children—Adam (16), Erica (15), and Alex (13)—who enjoy spending time together baking, hosting friends, and attending sporting events.

“I just love that I could give them this home. I feel so safe here.”

A Life-Changing Gift

Lori was overwhelmed with emotion upon learning she had won a brand-new, two-stage Bryant furnace—installed just in time for Christmas.

“I cried with my sister when I read her nomination. I’m so honored. It’s one less thing I have to worry about.”

The furnace was provided through a partnership between Finken Plumbing, Heating & Cooling, Bryant, and Auersteel, a Minneapolis-based distributor. The Bryant Community Heroes Program recognizes everyday individuals who make an extraordinary impact on their communities.

“We are honored as a company to take part in such an important, thoughtful program,” said Tom Finken, owner and president of Finken Companies.
“For all she does for others, we’re happy to be able to do this for her.”

Supporting Everyday Heroes
